THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

This page is dedicated to the 10 Kansas Highway Patrol Officers
who made the ultimate sacrifice and were killed in the line of duty
while serving the citizens of  Kansas.

Trooper Maurice R. Plummer

Trooper Plummer was the first member of the patrol to be killed in the line of duty.  Trooper Plummer was fatally injured in an automobile accident while patrolling US-40 about 5 miles west of Russell, Kansas on December 16, 1944.

Trooper Jimmie Jacobs

Trooper Jacobs was fatally injured in an automobile accident October 8, 1959 on US-54 east of El Dorado, Kansas.  Trooper Jacobs was making an emergency blood run and collided with a flat bed truck which made a left turn in front of him.

Trooper John McMurray

Trooper McMurray was fatally injured in an automobile accident December 9, 1964 on K-18 near Manhattan, Kansas.  Trooper McMurray was struck while putting his camera into the trunk of his patrol car, which was parked on the highway shoulder.

Lieutenant Bernard C. Hill

Lieutenant Hill was fatally injured in an automobile accident May 28, 1967 on the Kansas Turnpike near Andover.  A vehicle towing another in the opposite traffic lanes broke loose from the towed vehicle, crossed the median and hit Lieutenant Hill's vehicle.

Sergeant Eldon K. Miller

Sergeant Miller was shot and fatally injured on January 19, 1968.  Sergeant Miller the first Patrol member to be killed from gunfire, was shot while assisting in the apprehension of suspects who had robbed the Metcalf State Bank in Overland Park, Kansas.

Trooper James D. Thornton

Trooper Thornton was shot and fatally injured on October 2, 1973 while checking a hitchhiker on I-70 at the east edge of Topeka.  The man, wanted for the murder of his father in New York, was shot and killed by other officers when he refused to surrender.

Trooper Conroy G. O'Brien

Trooper O'Brien was shot and fatally injured on May 24, 1978 after stopping a car for a traffic violation on the Kansas Turnpike near Matfield Green.  Three suspects were apprehended after a vehicle chase, gun battle and massive manhunt south of Herrington, Kansas.

Trooper Ferdinand F. "Bud" Pribbenow

Trooper Pribbenow was shot and fatally injured on July 11, 1981 after stopping a speeding car on the Kansas Turnpike near El Dorado, Kansas.  The suspect was wounded and apprehended after a gun battle with officers near a Wichita Turnpike interchange.

Master Trooper Larry Huff

Master Trooper Huff was injured in an automobile accident on November 3, 1993/  Master Trooper Huff was patrolling US-81 south of Concordia, Kansas when his vehicle was struck broadside by a semi-truck as he was attempting to turn around in pursuit of a traffic violator.  Master Trooper Huff died as a result of his injuries on November 26, 1993.

Master Trooper Dean A. Goodheart

Master Trooper Goodheart was fatally injured in an automobile accident on September 6, 1995.  Master Trooper Goodheart was performing a routine motor carrier safety inspection on westbound I-70 near Oakley, Kansas when he was struck by a passing car.
