The Kansas Highway
Patrol in cooperation with the American Legion and
American Legion Auxiliary annually hosts a one week law
enforcement academy for high school students. The
academy is held at the KHP Training Center in Salina.
The Academy is meant to help young Kansans gain
knowledge in a hands on environment about the training
and responsibilities of law enforcement officers, and
specifically Kansas State Troopers.
Cadets learn about marching and
inspections.
Cadets spend time in a classroom.
Cadets learn techniques in
emergency vehicle operation.
Cadets receive some basic firearms
training.
Cadets experience some Kansas
Highway Patrol aircraft operations.
The experience of a lifetime for
any young adult who is considering a career in law
enforcement.
Eligible
cadets must be:
In the summer between
their Junior and Senior years of high school.
Be in good health to take
part in law enforcement related activities.
Have a "B" academic
average.
Write a 100 word essay
stating why they want to attend the academy.
Applications are accepted annually from
January through March 1st. Interested
students can contact the American Legion at

There is
no cost to the cadet, however there is a
$195 sponsorship fee by the local American
Legion Post or American Legion Auxiliary
Post. Lodging, food, uniform etc. are
provided for the week.
Cadet Law
is held during the month of June each year.
